TGI has been operated its glass packaging business in Thailand since 1951. It established Thai Glass Manufacturer Co., Ltd. as a joint venture with Australian Consolidated Industries Co., Ltd.—which later became Owens-Illinois, Inc. or O-I—who supported the founded company with modern technologies. TGI was the first glass packaging manufacturer in Thailand and Asia that used automatic machines. At present, the manufacturing capacity of TGI is over 2,400 tons per day.
Recently, BJC, the majority shareholder of TGI who owns 98.59 percent of the total shares, expanded the business again by partnering with Owens-Illinois, Inc., the world leader in glass packaging business, to establish BJC O-I Glass Pte., Ltd. to be a production base in Asia by acquiring Malaya Glass Products in Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam. The acquisition resulted in more market-responsive glass packaging productions and was considered a very important step taken by BJC and TGI for their glass packaging market penetration in Southeast Asia.Thai Glass Industries Public Company Limited (TGI) is a leading glass manufacturer in Thailand with a total capacity of 2,445 tons per day from two factories located in Rajburana, Bangkok, and Bangplee, Samutprakan. Both plants receive technical supports from Owens-Illinois and have been certified to the ISO 9001:2008, ISO 14001:2004 and OHSAS 18001:2007, whilst only Bangplee plant has been certified to the HACCP/GMP Standard. In 2012, TGI faced challenges from continuous increase in costs of raw material and energy, particularly for the electricity and LPG. However, the company’s performance was still very good compared to the previous year due to the good cooperation from management and staff in enhancing productivity, driving down costs, eliminating waste and promoting a safe workplace environment. With the dedication and commitment from both management and staff, TGI had received several awards in 2012.Initiating Lean Six Sigma in 2010 and continuously implementing it over the past three years, the company has been able to increase the number of Green Belts, Black Belts and Master Black Belts. This is not only to develop employees’ skills, but also to support cost reduction and quality improvement programs which will further improve TGI’s overall performance. In 2013, the company plans to drive TGI toward world class operational excellence by focusing on safety, environment, quality, productivity, supply chain and people development to ensure our readiness for the AEC in 2015.
